    OK, I just found out that the date when I found out is going to bloom again was 22nd of June. I also had the flower by the window where in the morning sun comes. Just recently I started to put it away from the window because the heat went up and it’s still doing great when I got it I think about in April it was blooming and then it was gone, but the leaves stayed green and then in June, I found out that is going to be blooming again. 😂 and inside I have a temperature about 24° Celsius. And I live in Europe in Germany.

      One of the main problems with helping anyone (and I’m certainly no Dendrobium expert) is that there are many types of Dendrobium with differing needs. I’ve focused here on one type, because I’ve grown it and experienced it. So if yours is a Nobile hybrid, I would remove all the keikis, and look at your conditions in comparison to what I’ve described in the video.

    .. I love my Begonia Coralina ☺️ I've got my mother plant in my living room, west facing but shaded by the upstairs balcony, and a cutting to root that also decided to bloom in an east facing window.. They are both blooming and growing like weeds.. The mother plant is almost as tall as me (162 cm).. .. There's something about cane Begonias that I just can't resist, and I just love them.. Only I wish that I had more of them..

    For any one who stumbled upon this old video as I did, Coco Coir is a highly versatile and productive medium for growing house plants with one main caveat...it is not soil. Coco Coir has very similar requirements to a hydroponics system and very few similarities to traditional soil and compost mixes. Buy rinsed and buffered Coco Coir or research how to rinse and buffer if not mentioned on the bags before planting anything, then mix with 20% perlite. The aforementioned potting mix should be fed with liquid feed at the specific E.C measurement requirement pertinent to the plant you are growing (circa 1.8 E.C for most house plants) with a circa 20%-30% run off to ensure the end of the run off measures the same E.C that you are pouring into the pot, and residual salt build up from the previous feeding are washed away. Liquid fertilizers are essentially salts and allowing your pots to dry out leaves residual salts that will quickly build up, raise the E.C and kill your plants. I gave a friend of mine a half litre pot of English ivy cuttings in a coco/perlite mix and half a litre of liquid feed almost 2 years ago, he has zero experience of caring for plants. All I told him was to put the plant on a windowsill, how to measure and mix the liquid feed with water and to water the plant with 1 litre once a week (Twice a year I buffer his plant medium with calcium and magnesium, search coco coir cation exchange) and his plant is thriving. It is impossible to overwater a coco coir / perlite potting mix, letting the medium dry out will cumulatively raise the E.C (residual salts) within the medium and quickly kill your plants. My young daughter and I have successfully grew indoors and flowered several tradescantia nanouk's, and cacti on our living room bay windowsill, grew a massive Hedera helix that wraps around the entire perimeter of the bay window and a kentia palm that has grew from circa 3 foot tall to circa 6 foot tall in circa 3 years...all in coco coir / perlite mixes. Outside in our palisade we also grow a variety of vegetables in the same coco coir / perlite mix and liquid feed. We yield circa 2 kg of Cherry Belle Radishes per 70 cm rectangle plastic planter, circa 4kg of potatoes per 60 litre round fabric pot and several stupid big carrots in the same size fabric pots just sat on our concrete palisade. 80% coco coir and 20% perlite rinsing the pots with enough feed and water mix to ensure a circa 20%-30% run off and never letting the pots dry out. My apologies for the long post.

    I appreciate your take on the use of fertilizer. I’ve taken care of phalaenopsis orchids for about 6+ years and had about 12 of them. Thanks. It’s an old video so I can’t even remember what I said. These days my position is that you get the growing conditions right first. That’s the priority. You can’t fertilise your way out of the wrong growing conditions. Following on from that you fertilise when the plant tells you it could do with it!

    Does the uv protection of the bubble wrap effect the plants? Ie does it also stop the blue and red light off the sun aswell as the UV ?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 14 днів тому

      It's a good question. Horticultural bubble-wrap is specifically designed for the purpose of lagging greenhouses. UV is mostly blocked, but plants don't really use UV anyway. The parts of the light spectrum that plants use are 'mostly' allowed through, but the intensity and levels are reduced. This can be a good thing as sunlight through glass can be very harmful for the plants inside - but compared to the light levels outside, it's much reduced, and therefore not optimal. As with many things greenhouse related, you're creating an artificial environment, which is always going to be sub-standard compared to their natural habitat. In summary, bubble-wrap does indeed reduce a portion of the usable light for the plants inside - but it also prevents them from dying through cold and frost!

    • @paulwilliammonks1
      @paulwilliammonks1 14 днів тому

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 thanks for the reply. Ive been using algae and cardboard to shade some plants as the tarpaulin blew away lol So the plants probably havent had full uv access anyway. Ive found similar stuff to yours on amazon so gunna give it a go for my first year with a greenhouse. Ps what are your thoughts on pollination in a greenhouse? Ive hand pollinated the tomato but the strawberry and pomegranate amd kiwi all need natural pollination but i only seem to get the odd few bluebottle flys that dont do the job. Are there any insects you can buy to populate the greenhouse for pollination?

    My begonia rex is starting to get pretty tall bare woody stems. What do I do when this happens? Should I bury the stem in a deeper pot?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 18 днів тому

      No - what I do when that happens is to find the lowest potential bud on one stem and prune down to it. Once the new bud starts to come into leaf, do the same with all the other leggy stems. You can do this process indefinitely to continually renew your plants. If you prune right to the base, below any potential buds, then you risk losing the plant. Hope that helps.

    I know you won't believe me but orchids are seasonal bloomers. Ie all of them follow the 4 seasons of the year to flower. Nobiles flower in spring after winter - as long as they haven't been confused too much, this depends when they were bought. The best time to buy a nobile is in spring since they will always be sold with flowers on so spring time means they will acclimatize to our seasons best. I mention you won't believe me because all you ever hear is that phals are triggered to flower by giving them a drop in temperatures in autumn and nobiles need a cool down in winter and the same for so many other cooler growing dendrobiums. This is just completely false. But long time experienced orchid growers aren't bothered correcting people that get this wrong. I've mostly given up correcting people too because as I already mentioned they never believe us anyway and even if we manage to convince 1 in 100 growers there will still be 99 parroting on that temperatures are important. The fact remains all orchids are seasonal. Phals generally spike in autumn when the sun light hours reduce and the temperatures drop. Has nothing to do with the drop in temperatures. I have performed several trials to confirm this and every year I repeat my trials but nobody is interested. It's like magic tricks. Everyone is awed by the magic. Then you get people that figure out how the magic trick is performed and some people do like to find out how the trick is performed but compared to the magician, the person revealing the secret never gets the same 'wow' reaction as the magician performing the trick. In the same way new orchid growers are wowed by the flowers and are happy to believe phals and dendrobiums need a cool down in order to flower but the person coming along to reveal how the magic is actually done in the orchid world just gets ignored or most often not believed cause if 99 say its temperature related cause that is all they have heard then the 1 person saying otherwise must be wrong. Temperatures are important for orchids. The orchids will not flower if temperatures are too high or too low for any particular species. They all have a range they will grow well in and flower well in. For dendrobium nobiles being cool growers it is important they don't get grown too hot in winter. But cooling them down is really not as important as it is made out to be. I will admit my nobiles got too big for my grow space and I have far too many orchids so I don't grow them anymore but I did grow them for 6 years and they always flowered beautifully being grown down to 16 degrees in winter. The trick is not to keep them hot. That is all. I know people that flowered them at 20 degrees just fine too. Phals flower best in a temperature range below 26 degrees C. They will grow well above 26 degrees but flowering will be affected if kept too much above 26 degrees. Again that is it, if a phal is grown at 20 degrees then cooling it down further will achieve absolutely nothing more. As a last note I will also add that I kept watering my nobiles all through winter as an experiement and they actualy flowered better than keeping them dry. It takes years, probably decades for most average growers to ever figure this out - and they must be willing to have the desire to figure it out also. Most youtubers are not that patient, read how it's done from a guide online and parrot on what they learnt like that. I really don't blame you, which youtuber ever gets it right? All they would achieve is a lot of downvotes from people that think they know it all having read a few online guides on the subject. And again I even realize you will dismiss this comment and say well it might be but who cares, I got my likes and to prove what tom is saying would take me a decade. No worries but I will still mention it and hopefully in 100 years or so people will have gotten it right. When it comes to orchids, nothing that is discovered about them happens overnight, we've only been growing them for just over 100 years, the books written in the 60's will invariably have gotten things wrong a bit because LED lights didn't even exist back then and most other orchid books on the subject since use old books as references so the same information will continue for many more decades but eventually with LED lighting far more available it is very easy to confirm what I am saying. Since all orchids are seasonal, one just has to grow them under LED lighting and change the light hours throughout the year to replicate the 4 seasons while keeping them warm. Or watch how people grow the cool growing orchids over in jamaica. That is how I figured out that there must be more to it originally actually. Like the dendrobium lindleyii flowers beautifully in a hot climate in jamaica too. It is a cool grower - what this means is not that it needs a cool temperature, all it means is that it can tolerate a cool temperature. So me living in a cool UK climate could flower them but once I copied jamaican temperatures my plant flowered 3 times better in fact. This made me question everything I had been told before. It's fascinating how many wrong notions we still have about orchids. They have been growing in nature for millions of years, we have only been cultivating them for a fraction of that time ourselves.

    How long does it take for young plant to grow to maturity? How do you know they are "mature" from their appearance?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 20 днів тому

      OK well the word 'maturity' is a term to simply mean that the plant has grown to a reasonable size. This may or may not be down to number of years in age. A plant could be 3 to 5 years old and be beyond the very small size you see commonly sold online i.e. it's gaining maturity. But then again, if it's kept in less that favourable conditions it could still be this size, despite being much older. There is no single day when it turns from being a youth into being a mature plant, it's just a gradual increase in size. Generally, the smaller the plant, the less robust it is and vice versa. In reasonably good conditions, you should get 'leaf jumps' in size after 3 to 5 years from being a seedling.

    Hi Geoff. I enjoyed seeing your great Begonia collection. They are one of my favourite plant families and as is always the case, I wish I had more space to have a few more. Thanks for the "show and tell". I'll take more of these types of videos if you have the time to make them.

    The sun light brings warmth, warmth aides in growth. I put my orchids especially my C. Orchids. They get all the morning sun, from rise till about 11 am. The they love it. All the growth points swell up and grow.

      Not this specific one - spider mite killed it. I have other Oncidiums though.

    You're still missing Begonia pavonia, tsk tsk.😛

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 21 день тому

      It's never really caught my eye - other than the obvious plethora of photos showing the iridescence. When it's not doing its thing, it looks rather drab IMO. Although I wouldn't be against giving it a try - especially seeing as its care requirements appear to fit my conditions rather well. Do you have it? To be honest I'd still love to get Beg. chlorosticta - but prices are silly and the last time I spent a fortune on one of these things, the plant was so small it didn't survive the postage.

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 I'd have to set something special up to grow it, and given what it costs here, I'd be mad if it died.

      Two methods. First, the name. Second, wait till it produces twining shoots. As far as I’m aware, there’s no other way to tell.

    Hi Geoff, I noticed that King sundew is getting HUGE! Look at those leaves! I've been propagating the heck out of my Autumn ember, I have around 6 of them now! Love those colors!

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 21 день тому

      Yeah it’s about 30cm long now in the leaf. It took a repot to do it - the fresher moss seems to have done the trick. And this autumn I’ll have a sizeable specimen of autumn ember in the house! Just need to sort the lighting issue in the greenhouse next.

    Fun video - as soon as i saw your Corallina i jumped online to see if i could find one (despite horrible luck with begonias - the only one that has survived and is now huge is my Marmaduke) - apparently that pink coloring of the leaves must be because of low light conditions - could no find a single picture online with pink leaves

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 22 дні тому

      🤣 yeah I’ve accidentally improved it with my poor care! I do actually expect it’ll lose those pink leaves despite the attractiveness. Will be interesting to see what it does next in the better, but still not great, light conditions of the greenhouse.
